Confidentiality ...

The trust between client and therapist is crucial to the success of the counselling process and I treat all information disclosed as confidential. It is important that all clients have the privacy to discuss issues which may be difficult to disclose to family and friends.

When adolescents or young people are brought to counselling by their parents or carers, what is talked about in a counselling session with a young person remains confidential and will only be disclosed to parents or other people with the young person's permission. However, there are times when it is important that information is passed on, and in such instances how and when information is to be shared will be discussed with the young person.

Counsellors and psychotherapists, like me, who subscribe to the BACP’s code of ethics are required to have regular clinical supervision of my work to ensure that adequate standards of counselling are maintained and that my clients best interests are protected. My supervisor and I do not disclose client details to any third party without the client’s permission.

However, if in my opinion, if any client clearly presents a danger to himself or herself or to others I do reserve the right to inform the appropriate agencies. In addition, confidentiality can only be offered within accepted legal boundaries. It is my practice wherever possible to inform the client first should confidentiality need to be breached.
